列车运行时，常常产生作用在钢轨上的纵向力，使钢轨作纵向移动，有时甚至带动轨枕一起移动。这种纵向移动，叫做爬行。爬行一般发生在复线铁路的区间正线、单线铁路的重车方向、下坡道上和进站时的制动范围内。 线路爬行往往引起轨缝不匀，轨枕歪斜等现象，对线路的破坏性很大，甚至造成；车辆脱轨跑道，危及行车安全。因此，必须采取有效措施来防止爬行，通常采用防爬器和防爬撑来防止线路爬行。
1、穿销式防爬器是由带挡板的轨卡的穿销组成的。安装时，轨卡的一边卡紧轨底，另一边楔进穿销，使整个防爬器牢固地卡住轨底。这样，钢轨在受到纵向阻力时，由于轨卡的挡板紧贴着轨枕，于是轨枕和道订就阻止钢轨爬行。为了充分发挥防爬器的作用，通常在轨枕之间还安装防爬撑，把3～5根轨枕联系起来，共同抵抗钢轨爬行。
2、防爬器分为焊接式防爬器和紧固式防爬器，分别适用于多种型号的钢轨。这种铁路轨道用螺旋式强力防爬器，分为铸造型和焊接型两个形式，铸造型是由凸、凹形轨卡、螺栓、承力板所组成；焊接型由轨卡、锁轨扣、螺栓、轨挡和承力板所组成。这两个形式的螺旋式强力防爬器是通过拧紧螺栓使轨卡紧紧卡住钢轨，从而防止了钢轨在机车行驶和刹车时造成的爬行现象，可减少铁路事故的发生。
